Joni Sternbach - Surfboard

I’ve been a big fan of Joni Sternbach’s Surfland portraits of surfers for quite some time. To me, the portraits are both contemporary and timeless.
In her latest book, Surfboard, Joni turns her lens on the surfer’s exquisitely crafted surfboards. She sent me the following quote about her series. “The pictures in this book were made over a two year period at SHACC in San Clemente. It was a long process, tedious at times, from getting permission (each time) to visit and shoot, to getting there and preparing the chemistry and camera and other materials. Each visit I was only able to make about 8-10 plates over a two day period, so the going was very slow. I envisioned this project as a book from the beginning. However I started out trying to make ambrotypes, not collodion negatives. When I got back to NY after the first shoot and tried scanning the plates, they were significantly over exposed, so I tried printing them and liked what I saw. For the subsequent shoots I made sure to make negatives intentionally."
